Pillars of Islam

The Sin of Shirk

Testify

Do you truly testify that there are other gods besides Allah? 6:19, 27:63

Unforgivable Sin

Indeed, Allah does not forgive those who associate partners with Him, but He forgives anything else for whomever He wills. Whoever sets up partners with Allah has committed a grave sin. 4:48, 4:116

Forgivable Sin

Even after witnessing clear signs, the People of the Book worshipped the calf, yet Allah forgave them. 4:153

No Help or Harm

Gods Invoked

Is Allah not sufficient for His servant? Yet they threaten you with those besides Him. 39:36

Say: Have you considered what you call upon besides Allah? Show me what they have created of the earth. Or do they hold a share in the heavens? Bring me a scripture before this, or a trace of knowledge, if you are truthful. 46:4

Those they invoke besides Allah create nothing; rather, they themselves are created. 16:20

If you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will say, "Allah." Say, "Then do you think those you call upon besides Him can remove harm from me if Allah wills it, or withhold mercy if He grants it?" Say, "Allah is enough for me. In Him, the faithful put their trust." 39:38

Say: “Call upon those you claim besides Allah. They do not possess even an atom’s weight in the heavens or the earth, nor do they share in them, nor does He have any helper among them.” 17:56, 34:22, 43:86

Those they invoke, themselves seek closeness to their Lord, hoping for His mercy and fearing His punishment. The punishment of your Lord is truly dreadful. 17:57

Say: Shall we call upon others besides Allah, those who can neither benefit nor harm us, and turn back after guidance has reached us? Like one whom devils have led astray in the wilderness, confused, while his companions call him to the right path, saying, "Come to us!" 6:71

He calls upon one whose harm is closer than his benefit. What a miserable patron, what a miserable companion. 22:13

Whoever calls upon another god besides Allah, for which he has no proof, his reckoning is with his Lord. The disbelievers will never succeed. 23:117

So do not call upon any god besides Allah, or you will be among the punished. 26:213, 28:88

They will have no intercessors among those they once associated with Allah, and they will reject their former partners. 30:13

Allah judges with justice, while those they invoke besides Him judge nothing. 40:20

Have you seen the one who takes his desires as his god? Can you be his guardian? 25:43

Or do they have gods who can defend them? They cannot help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us. 21:43

We granted them enjoyment and their ancestors, but do they not see that We reduce the land from its borders? Will they still prevail? 21:44

Those they invoke besides Him have no power of intercession, except those who testify to the truth knowingly. 43:86

His saying, “O my Lord, these are a people who do not believe.” 43:88

What they once invoked will abandon them, and they will realize they have no escape. 41:48

Likewise, their idols have made the killing of their children seem fair to them, leading to their ruin and confusion in their faith. Had Allah willed, they would not have done so. So, leave them and their fabrications. 6:137

If Only

Even they used to say, 37:167

“If only we had a reminder from those before. 37:168

We would have been Allah’s devoted servants.” 37:169

But they rejected it, so they will soon know. 37:170

Leave Them

Our word has already gone forth to Our servants, the messengers. 37:171

That they will surely be helped, 37:172

And that Our forces will be the victors. 37:173

So, turn away from them for a while, 37:174

And watch them, they too will see. 37:175

When it descends upon their courtyards, it will be a terrible morning for those who were warned. 37:177

So, turn away from them for a while, 37:178

And watch, they too will see. 37:179

Types of False Deity

Intercessors Worshipped

They worship besides Allah things that neither harm nor benefit them, saying, “These are our intercessors with Allah.” Say, “Do you inform Allah of something He does not know in the heavens or the earth?” 7:192, 10:18, 10:106, 16:73, 22:12, 25:3, 25:55

Yet they take others besides Allah as intercessors. Say, "Even though they have no power and no understanding?" 39:43

And it will be said to them, “Where are those you used to worship, 26:92

Besides Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?” 26:93

Remind them that every soul will be held accountable for what it has earned. They will have no protector or intercessor besides Allah, and even if they offer every ransom, it will not be accepted. These are the ones who are doomed by their own choices. 6:70

Now we have no intercessors. 26:100

Nor a single close friend. 26:101

Intercession will be of no benefit except for those whom He permits and whose words He approves. 20:109

Those you call on besides Him don’t own even a speck. 35:13

If you call on them, they can’t hear you. And even if they could, they wouldn’t respond. 35:14

They will have no intercessors among those they once associated with Allah, and they will reject their former partners. 30:13

Their gods, whom they invoked besides Allah, did nothing to help them when your Lord’s command came. Instead, they only increased their ruin. 7:197, 11:101, 21:43

Should I take others as gods besides Him? If the Merciful intends harm for me, their intercession won’t help me at all, nor can they save me. 36:23

Then I would be clearly lost. 36:24

“You have come to Us alone, just as We created you the first time, leaving behind everything We gave you. We do not see your intercessors, whom you claimed were partners with Allah. All ties between you have been severed, and what you assumed has abandoned you.” 6:94

Two Deities

Allah has declared: “Do not take two gods. There is only One Allah, so be in awe of Me alone.” 16:51

Several Gods into One

“Has he merged all our gods into one? This is truly astonishing!” 38:5

Their leaders conspired, saying, “Hold fast to your gods, this is a calculated scheme.” 38:6

“We have never heard such claims in our forefathers’ faith; this is mere fabrication.” 38:7

Do they hold the treasures of your Lord’s mercy? 38:9

Or do they command the heavens and the earth? Let them ascend, if they can! 38:10

A confederation of forces will soon be defeated. 38:11

Specific Goddesses

Have you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza, 53:19

And Manat, the third, the other one? 53:20

Are you to have the males, and He the females? 53:21

What a skewed distribution! 53:22

These are nothing but names you and your ancestors have invented. Allah has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but assumptions and desires. Though guidance has already come to them from their Lord. 53:23

Is man to have whatever he wishes? 53:24

To Allah belongs the Last and the First. 53:25

Daughters Attributed

They call upon nothing but female deities and invoke none but Satan, the rebellious. 4:117

They attribute daughters to Allah, glory be to Him, while they themselves prefer sons. 16:57

Male and Female

So, they dare to claim, from the depths of their fabrication, 37:151

that the Almighty has begotten offspring? Indeed, they are utter liars. 37:152

That Allah has daughters, while they themselves prefer sons? 37:153

What a strange judgment they pass! 37:154

Will you not reflect? 37:155

Or do you have a clear proof? 37:156

Then bring your scripture, if you are truthful. 37:157

And they claim a kinship between Him and the jinn, yet the jinn know they will be brought to account. Allah is far above what they attribute to Him. 37:158

Except for Allah’s devoted servants. 37:160

Surely, neither you nor what you worship 37:161

Can tempt anyone away from Him 37:162

Except those destined for the Blaze. 37:163

Angels

Or did We create the angels as females while they were watching? 37:150

Those who deny the Hereafter give the angels female names. 53:27

Nor would a true messenger ever command you to take angels or prophets as lords. Would he call you to disbelief after you have submitted? 3:80

Has your Lord favoured you with sons while taking daughters for Himself? You utter a monstrous claim. 17:40, 37:149, 43:16, 52:39

Yet when one of them is given news of what he attributes to the Most Merciful, his face darkens, suppressing grief. 43:17

“Someone raised in adornment, unable to stand firm in argument?” 43:18

And they appoint the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, as females. Have they witnessed their creation? Their claim will be recorded, and they will be questioned. 43:19

They say, “Had the Most Merciful willed, we would not have worshiped them.” But they have no knowledge of this; they are merely guessing. 43:20

Or have We given them a Book before this, to which they hold fast? 43:21

Rather, they say, “We found our forefathers upon a way, and we follow in their footsteps.” 43:22

Thus, We sent no warner before you to any town without its wealthy saying, “We found our forefathers upon a way, and we follow in their footsteps.” 43:23

“Gather the wrongdoers, their partners, and all they used to worship. 37:22

Besides Allah, and lead them to the path of Hell. 37:23

Livestock

They assign to Allah a portion of the crops and livestock He created, saying, “This is for Allah,” and “This is for our idols.” But what is assigned to their idols does not reach Allah, while what is assigned to Allah is diverted to their idols. How evil is their judgment! 6:136

False Deities

They have taken gods besides Allah to give them honour. 19:81, 52:43

Yet they take gods besides Allah, hoping for help. 36:74

They cannot help them, even though they are lined up as a ready army for them. 36:75

Or have they taken gods from the earth who can raise the dead? 21:21

Or have they taken guardians besides Him? But Allah alone is the Guardian, the One who revives the dead. 42:9

They will say, “Glory be to You! It was not for us to take any lords besides You. But You gave them and their ancestors enjoyment until they forgot the Reminder and became ruined.” 25:18

The example of those who take protectors besides Allah is like a spider building its house. But the weakest of houses is the spider’s house, if only they knew. 29:41

Have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god? Allah lets him stray knowingly, seals his hearing and heart, and places a veil over his sight. Who then can guide him after Allah? Will you not reflect? 45:23

Is there a god besides Allah? No, but they are a people who ascribe equals to Him. 27:60

Is there a god besides Allah? No, but most of them do not know. 27:61

Is there a god besides Allah? Little do you reflect. 27:62

Is there a god besides Allah? Exalted is He above what they associate with Him. 27:63

Is there a god besides Allah? Say, “Bring your proof, if you are truthful.” 27:64

And We will bring forth a witness from every nation and say, “Produce your proof.” Then they will know that the truth belongs to Allah, and what they fabricated will forsake them. 28:75

Or have they taken gods besides Him? Say, “Bring your proof. This is the message of those with me and those before me.” But most of them do not know the truth, so they turn away. 21:24

Say, “If there were other gods alongside Him, as they claim, they would have sought a way to the Lord of the Throne.” 17:42

Or have We sent them an authority that speaks in favour of their polytheism? 30:35

Say, “Praise be to Allah, and peace upon His servants whom He has chosen. Is Allah better, or what they associate with Him?” 27:59

Ask those We sent before you among the messengers, did We ever appoint gods to be worshiped besides the Most Merciful? 43:45

Different Groups

Hypocrites

When hardship touches a person, he calls upon his Lord, turning to Him. But when Allah grants him a favour, he forgets what he prayed for before and sets up rivals to Allah, leading others astray. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little while, you will be among the people of the Fire." 39:8

So that Allah may punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the idolaters, men and women, and turn in mercy to the believers, men and women. 33:73

When he embraces her, she carries a light burden and moves about freely. But when it grows heavy, they call upon Allah, their Lord, saying, “If You grant us a good child, we will be grateful.” 7:189, 30:33

But when He grants them a healthy child, they attribute partners to Him in what He has given them. 7:190

When hardship strikes at sea, those you invoke vanish, except Him. But when He brings you safely to shore, you turn away. Man is ever ungrateful. 17:67, 29:65

But when He removes your distress, some among you return to their idols, 16:54, 30:33

"Besides Allah?" They will reply, "They have abandoned us. In truth, we never worshiped anything." That is how Allah leads the disbelievers astray. 40:74

But their faith was of no benefit once they witnessed Our punishment. This has always been Allah’s way with His servants; the disbelievers were utterly lost. 40:85

When they saw Our punishment, they cried, "We believe in Allah alone and reject what we had been associating with Him!" 40:84

Among people is one who worships Allah on the edge: if good befalls him, he is content; but if trial strikes, he turns away, losing both this world and the next. That is the clearest loss. 22:11

Idolators

What you call them to is burdensome for the idolaters. 42:13

They assign to Allah what they dislike for themselves, and their tongues utter lies: “The best belongs to us.” 16:62

Let them deny what We have given them and enjoy themselves for a while, they will soon know. 29:66, 30:34

Yet they worship besides Allah what He has sent no authority for, and what they have no knowledge of. The wrongdoers will have no helper. 22:71

Why then did those they took as gods besides Allah not help them? Instead, they vanished from them. That was their lie and what they used to fabricate. 46:28

Jews and Christians

They took their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah, as well as the Messiah, son of Mary, though they were commanded to worship only one God. There is no god but Him. 9:31

As for the believers, Jews, Sabaeans, Christians, Magians, and polytheists, Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. 22:17

Muhammad

He nearly led us away from our gods, had we not been steadfast.” But soon they will know, when they see the punishment, who is furthest astray. 25:42

Say, “Come, let me recite what your Lord has forbidden: Do not associate anything with Him. 6:151

Say, "I am forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allah, since clear proofs have come to me from my Lord. I am commanded to submit to the Lord of all worlds." 40:66

Say, “My Lord has forbidden shameful deeds, both open and hidden, sin, oppression, associating others with Him without authority, and speaking about Him without knowledge.” 7:33

Say, “Travel the earth and see the fate of those before you, most of them were polytheists.” 30:42

Believers

You will surely be tested in your wealth and yourselves, and you will hear much abuse from those who were given the Scripture before you and from the polytheists. But if you remain patient and mindful of Allah, that is the best course. 3:186

We are sufficient for you against those who mock, 15:95

Disobey Unbelievers

Turn away from those who associate others with Him. 6:106, 6:150, 15:94

If you obey them, you will be among the wrongdoers. 6:121

But if they pressure you to associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you of what you did. 29:8

If any of them were to say, “I am a god besides Him,” We would punish him with Hell. This is how We repay the wrongdoers. 21:29

Allah and Shirk

Allah

To Him alone belongs the call of truth. Those they invoke besides Him cannot respond, like one stretching his hands toward water that never reaches his mouth. The prayers of the disbelievers are in vain. 13:14

Say: It is Allah who rescues you from this, and from every storm of sorrow, yet still, you associate others beside Him. 6:64

He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion to make it prevail over all others, even if the polytheists resent it. 9:33, 61:9

O believers! Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous offerings, and divining arrows are vile works of Satan, so avoid them that you may succeed. 5:90

"Most of them do not believe in Allah without also associating others with Him." 12:106

Allah knows whatever they call upon besides Him. 29:42

Creator

Had there been other gods besides Allah in the heavens or on the earth, both would have been ruined. 21:22

Among His signs are the night and the day, the sun and the moon. Do not bow to the sun or the moon, but bow to Allah, who created them, if you truly worship Him. 41:37

Say, “Have you considered, if Allah made the night continuous until the Day of Resurrection, who besides Allah could bring you light? Will you not listen?” 28:71

Say: “Have you seen your partners whom you call besides Allah? Show me what they’ve created on earth. Or do they have a share in the heavens? Or have We given them a book with clear proof?” No, the wrongdoers promise each other nothing but delusion. 31:11, 35:40

Yet they ascribe partners to Allah. Say, “Name them! Or do you presume to inform Him of something unknown on earth? Or are these mere words?” 13:33

Those you call upon besides Allah cannot create even a fly, even if they all gathered for it. And if the fly snatches something from them, they cannot retrieve it. Weak are both the seeker and the sought. 22:73

Allah is the One who created you, then provided for you, then causes you to die, then brings you back to life. Can any of your partners do any of this? Glory be to Him. 30:40

Do they associate with Him things that create nothing and are themselves created? 7:191

Or have they assigned partners to Allah who create as He creates, so that creation appears similar to them? 13:16

But if they had associated others with Him, all their deeds would have been in vain. 6:88

So do not compare Allah to anything. Allah knows, while you do not. 16:74

Yet they assign to Him a portion of His servants, man is clearly ungrateful. 43:15

Regret

On the Day He gathers them and what they worshipped besides Allah, He will say, “Did you mislead My servants, or did they stray on their own?” 25:17

They will say, “Glory be to You! It was not for us to take any lords besides You. But You gave them and their ancestors enjoyment until they forgot the Reminder and became ruined.” 25:18

“By Allah, we were clearly astray, 26:97

When we equated you with the Lord of the Worlds. 26:98

No one led us astray but the wicked. 26:99

Now we have no intercessors.” 26:100

Partner's Witness

On the Day We gather them all, We will say to those who associated others with Allah, “Stay where you are, you and your partners.” Then We will separate them, and their partners will say, “You never truly worshipped us.” 6:22, 10:28, 16:27, 26:92, 28:62, 28:74, 40:73, 41:47

On the Day He gathers them and what they worshipped besides Allah, He will say, “Did you mislead My servants, or did they stray on their own?” 25:17

Who is more unjust than one who fabricates lies against Allah or rejects His signs? They will receive their portion, and when Our messengers come to take their souls, they will say, “Where are those you invoked besides Allah?” They will reply, “They have abandoned us.” Thus, they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers. 7:37

Those against whom the decree is justified will say, “Our Lord, these are the ones we led astray, we led them astray as we ourselves were astray. We declare our innocence before You, it was not us they worshiped.” 28:63

And it will be said, “Call upon your partners.” But they will not respond to them, and they will see the punishment. If only they had been guided! 28:64, 46:5

But no! They will reject their worship and become their opponents. 19:82, 35:14

Then they will have no excuse but to say, “By Allah, our Lord, we were never polytheists.” 6:23, 41:47

“If only I had not associated anyone with my Lord!” 18:42

See how they lie against themselves, and how their false gods have abandoned them! 6:24

Judgement

He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned. 21:23

"But you may worship whatever you wish besides Him." Say, "The true losers are those who lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. That is the ultimate loss." 39:15

Is not sincere faith owed to Allah alone? Yet some take guardians besides Him, saying, "We worship them only to draw closer to Allah." But Allah will judge between them regarding their differences. 39:3

They do not value Allah as He deserves. On the Day of Judgment, the earth will be in His grip, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. 39:67

The trumpet will be blown, and all in the heavens and the earth will fall unconscious, except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and they will rise, looking on. 39:68

Everything is bound to perish except His face. His is the judgment, and to Him you will be returned. 28:88

This is because when Allah alone was called upon, you rejected Him, but when others were associated with Him, you believed. The judgment belongs to Allah. 40:12

Whoever associates others with Allah, it is as if he fell from the sky and was snatched by birds or swept away by the wind to a distant place. 22:31

Who set up another Allah beside Allah, so cast him into the severe punishment.” 50:26

That is because Allah alone is the Truth, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood. 22:62

Punishment

Say, “If calamity were to strike you, or the final Hour were to come, would you call upon anyone other than Allah, if you are truthful?” 6:40

Those who do not invoke other gods besides Allah, nor take a life unjustly, nor commit adultery. Whoever does so will face severe consequences. 25:68

And those who followed will say, “No, it was your scheming, night and day, commanding us to disbelieve in Allah and set up equals with Him.” They will all hide their regret when they see the punishment. And We will place shackles around the necks of the disbelievers. Will they be repaid for anything but what they used to do? 34:33

“Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah are fuel for Hell, you will enter it.” 21:98

If these were truly gods, they would not enter it, but all will abide therein. 21:99

Tawhid

Abraham

You have a noble example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, “We disown you and what you worship besides Allah. We reject you, and between us and you, hostility and hatred has appeared, until you believe in Allah alone.” But Abraham’s words to his father, “I will ask forgiveness for you, though I have no power to help you before Allah,” were an exception. They said, “Our Lord, in You we trust, to You we turn, and to You is the final return.” 6:161, 16:120, 16:123, 43:26, 60:4

Were you present when death came to Jacob? He asked his sons, 'What will you worship after I am gone?' They replied, 'We will worship your Allah, the God of Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac, the One True God, and to Him we submit.' 2:133

Israel

And remember when We took a covenant from the Children of Israel: 'Do not worship anyone but Allah. 2:83

They were commanded only to worship Allah, devoting their faith to Him alone, to establish prayer and give charity, That is the true religion. 98:5

Angels

Allah bears witness that there is no deity but Him, as do the angels and those endowed with knowledge, upholding justice. 3:18

Nor would a true messenger ever command you to take angels or prophets as lords. 3:80

“Warn that there is no Allah but Me, so be mindful of Me.” 16:2

No Allah but One

Allah, there is no Allah but Him, 2:163, 2:255, 3:2, 3:6, 3:18, 3:62, 4:87, 6:19, 6:102, 6:106, 7:158, 9:31, 9:129, 11:2, 11:14, 13:30, 14:52, 16:22, 16:51, 20:8, 22:34, 23:116, 27:60, 28:70, 28:88, 35:3, 37:4, 37:35, 38:65, 39:6, 39:14, 39:66, 40:3, 40:65, 41:6, 43:84, 44:8, 47:19, 59:22, 59:23, 64:13, 73:9

Pray and Sacrifice

That is the command. Whoever honours Allah’s sacred ordinances, it is best for them with their Lord. Livestock are made lawful to you, except what is recited to you. So, avoid the filth of idols and false speech. 22:30

So, pray to your Lord and sacrifice. 108:2

Muhammad

Say, "Do you command me to worship other than Allah, O ignorant ones?" 39:64

It has been revealed to you and those before you that if you associate others with Allah, your deeds will be nullified, and you will be among the losers. 39:65

Say, “I am forbidden from worshiping those you invoke besides Allah.” Say, “I will not follow your desires, for that would lead me astray and make me one of the lost.” 6:56, 6:79, 10:104, 12:108, 18:38, 72:20

Say, I am free from your associations. 6:19, 6:79

I reject your past association of me with Allah. 14:22

Say, “It is only revealed to me that your Allah is One Allah. So will you submit?” 21:108

I am only commanded to worship Allah and associate none with Him. 13:36, 17:23, 29:56, 36:61

Say, “I am but a human like you, inspired that your Allah is One. So, stand firm before Him and seek His forgiveness.” 41:6

Whoever hopes to meet his Lord should do righteous deeds and not associate anyone in worship with Him. 18:110

Allah

Your Allah is One, so submit to Him. 22:34

Say, "Intercession belongs entirely to Allah. 39:44

When Allah alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink in aversion. But when others are mentioned besides Him, they rejoice. 39:45

He neither begets nor is begotten. 112:3

And there is none equal to Him. 112:4

Say, “Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth?” 13:16

He is Allah, present in the heavens and the earth. 6:3

No Associates

Do not be among those who associate others with Allah. 10:105, 10:106, 28:87, 28:88, 30:31, 72:2

Whoever associates partners with Allah, Paradise is forbidden to them 5:72

Be upright for Allah, not associating anything with Him. 22:31

We will cast fear into the hearts of those who disbelieve because they associate partners with Allah, something He has never authorized. 3:151

Those who disbelieved and turned others away from Allah’s path will face multiplied punishment for their corruption. 16:88

What you call them to is burdensome for the idolaters. 42:13

No Partners

They assign to Allah a portion of the crops and livestock He created, saying, “This is for Allah,” and “This is for our idols.” But what is assigned to their idols does not reach Allah, while what is assigned to Allah is diverted to their idols. How evil is their judgment! 6:136

And say, “Praise be to Allah, who has neither taken a son nor has any partner in His dominion, nor needs a protector against weakness.” Glorify Him greatly. 17:111

He has no partner. 6:163

Say: “Show me those you’ve joined with Him as partners. No! He alone is Allah. 34:27

Those who call upon others besides Him follow nothing but assumptions and merely speculate. 10:66

No! It is Him alone you call upon. 6:41

When those who associated others with Allah see their so-called partners, they will say, “Our Lord, these are the ones we invoked besides You.” But their partners will respond, “You are liars.” 16:86

Say, “Can any of your partners guide to the truth?” Say, “Allah guides to the truth. Is one who guides more worthy to be followed, or one who cannot guide unless guided himself? What is wrong with you, how do you judge?” 10:35

Do they have feet to walk, hands to grasp, eyes to see, or ears to hear? Say, “Call upon your partners, then plot against me, and do not delay.” 7:195, 96:17

Do not set up another Allah beside Allah. 51:51

That Day, they will surrender to Allah, and all their fabrications will vanish. 16:87

Say, “Can any of your partners create and then recreate?” Say, “Allah alone creates and recreates, so why do you turn away?” 10:34, 27:64, 30:27

No Equals

Yet those who reject Him set up equals beside Him. 6:1, 15:96

Say, “Do you truly deny the One who created the earth in two days, and set up equals beside Him?” 41:9

Do not set up rivals to Allah when you know the truth. 2:22

Do not set up another Allah alongside Allah, lest you end up disgraced and forsaken. 17:22, 17:39

They set up equals to Allah to mislead others from His path. Say, “Enjoy yourselves for a while, for your final home is the Fire.” 14:30

No Lords

that we worship none but Allah, associate nothing with Him, and do not take one another as lords besides Him.’ 3:64, 4:36

And that He is the Lord of Sirius, 53:49

They took their rabbis and monks as lords besides Allah, as well as the Messiah, son of Mary, though they were commanded to worship only one Allah. There is no Allah but Him. 9:31

Say, ‘O People of the Book, let us come to a common word between us, that we worship none but Allah, associate nothing with Him, and do not take one another as lords besides Him.’ 3:64

Nor would a true messenger ever command you to take angels or prophets as lords. 3:80

No Allies

Ask, “Have you taken protectors besides Him, who can neither benefit nor harm themselves?” Say, “Are the blind and the seeing equal? Is darkness equal to light?” 13:16

As for those who take guardians besides Him, Allah watches over them. 42:6

Do not follow other guardians besides Him. 7:3

Do not call upon anyone besides Him. 72:18

We will never invoke any Allah besides Him, if we did, we would be committing a grave injustice.” 18:14

So do not call upon any Allah besides Allah, or you will be among the punished. 26:213

Prayer and Salat

Establish Prayer

Those who establish prayer 2:3, 2:43, 2:83, 2:110, 2:177, 2:277, 4:77, 4:162, 5:12, 5:55, 6:72, 7:170, 8:3, 9:5, 9:11, 9:18, 9:71, 13:22, 14:31, 14:37, 19:31, 19:55, 20:14, 21:73, 22:35, 22:41, 22:78, 24:56, 27:3, 29:45, 30:31, 31:4, 31:17, 33:33, 35:18, 35:29, 42:38, 58:13, 73:20, 98:5

O you who believe, bow, prostrate, worship your Lord, and do good, so that you may succeed. 22:77

Names

Say, “Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful, whichever name you use, His are the finest names.” Do not be loud in your prayer, nor too quiet, but seek a middle way. 17:110

Remember the name of your Lord morning and evening, 76:25

Qiblah (Direction)

The foolish among the people say, 'What turned them from the sacred direction they once faced?' Say: ‘To Allah belong the East and the West. 2:142

Say, 'We believe in Allah and in what was revealed to us, and in what was sent to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between them, and to Him we submit.' 2:143

We have seen you, O Prophet, turning your face toward the heavens in anticipation. Now, We will direct you toward a prayer direction that pleases you. So, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. Those who were given the Scripture know that this is the truth from their Lord. 2:144

Righteousness is not merely turning your faces toward the east or west. True righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets, and who gives wealth, despite loving it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, travellers, and those who ask for help, and for freeing slaves. It is in those who establish prayer, give charity, fulfil their promises, and remain patient in hardship and adversity. These are the truthful ones, and they are the truly righteous. 2:177

Even if you bring every proof to those who were given the Scripture, they will not follow your direction of prayer, nor will you follow theirs. Neither will they follow one another’s direction. If you were to follow their desires after knowledge has come to you, you would surely be among the wrongdoers. 2:145

Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize this truth as they recognize their own children. Yet some knowingly conceal the truth. 2:146

Each community has its own direction toward which it turns; so race one another in acts of goodness. Wherever you may be, God will gather you all together—surely God has power over everything. 2:148

Wherever you go, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. This is the truth from your Lord, and Allah is never unaware of what you do. 2:149

Wherever you go, turn toward the Sacred Mosque so that people will have no argument against you, except those who act unjustly. Do not fear them; fear Me, so that I may complete My favour upon you and guide you. 2:150

We inspired Moses and his brother: “Settle your people in Egypt and make your homes places of worship. Establish prayer and give good news to the believers.” 10:87

In houses Allah has permitted to be raised and where His name is remembered, there, morning and evening, 24:36

Call to Prayer

O you who believe, when the call is made for prayer on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade. That is better for you, if only you knew. 62:9

And when the prayer is finished, disperse through the land and seek Allah’s bounty, and remember Allah often so that you may succeed. 62:10

Yet when they saw a trade or amusement, they rushed toward it and left you standing. Say, “What is with Allah is better than amusement and trade. 62:11

When you call to prayer, they ridicule it as mere amusement. This is because they lack understanding. 5:58

Prayer Times

Prayer is a duty for believers at appointed times. 4:103

Guard your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before Allah in devotion. 2:238

In houses Allah has permitted to be raised and where His name is remembered, there, morning and evening, 24:36

Stay close to those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His pleasure. 18:28

Establish prayer at both ends of the day and in the early hours of the night. Good deeds erase bad ones, this is a reminder for those who reflect. 11:114

Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of night, and the dawn recitation, surely, the dawn recitation is witnessed. 17:78

O you who believe, let your servants and those among you who have not yet reached puberty ask permission before entering at three times: before dawn prayer, when you remove your garments at midday, and after the night prayer. These are private times for you. Outside of these, there is no blame for you, and they move about one another freely. Thus, Allah makes His signs clear. 24:58

And bow before Him during part of the night, and glorify Him through long hours of the night. 76:26

And rise for prayer during part of the night as an additional devotion for you. Perhaps your Lord will raise you to a praiseworthy station. 17:79

Standing

Never stand in it! A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your prayers. 9:108

Praying at Night

They rise from their beds as they call upon their Lord in fear and hope. 32:16

No soul knows what delights await them, a reward for what they used to do. 32:17

We used to call upon Him before 52:28

you wrapped in your cloak, 73:1

Stand through the night in prayer, except for a little,  73:2

Half the night, or a little less, 73:3

Or a little more, and recite the Quran with measured rhythm. 73:4

We are about to place upon you a weighty word. 73:5

Truly, night prayer leaves a deeper imprint and is more upright in speech. 73:6

By day, you are occupied with long engagements. 73:7

So, remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with full devotion. 73:8

Ablutions (Washing)

O believers, do not approach prayer while intoxicated until you understand what you say, nor when in a state of impurity, unless traveling, until you have bathed. If you are ill, on a journey, or have touched women and find no water, then perform dry ablution with clean earth, wiping your faces and hands. 4:43

O believers! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces, hands to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles. If impure, purify yourselves. If ill, traveling, or unable to find water, use clean earth and wipe your faces and hands. Allah does not burden you but seeks to purify and complete His favour upon you, so you may be grateful. 5:6

Successful is the one who purifies himself. 87:14, 91:9

Who remembers the name of his Lord and prays. 87:15

On the Move

If you fear danger, pray however you can, standing, sitting, or lying down. But when you are safe, remember Allah 2:239

Shortening Prayer

When you travel through the land, there is no blame in shortening your prayers if you fear harm from the disbelievers. Indeed, the disbelievers are your clear enemies. 4:101

Praying with Weapons

When you lead them in prayer, let a group stand with you while armed, and when they finish, let another group take their place. Let them remain cautious with their weapons. The disbelievers wish you would neglect your arms and belongings so they could attack you suddenly. But there is no blame if you set aside your weapons due to rain or illness, just remain vigilant. 4:102

When you complete the prayer, remember Allah, standing, sitting, and lying down. Then, when you feel secure, establish regular prayer. Prayer is a duty for believers at appointed times. 4:103

Muhammad

Your Lord knows that you stand in prayer nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or a third, as do some of those with you. Allah determines the measure of night and day. He knows you cannot keep to it, so He has turned to you in mercy. Recite what you can of the Quran. 73:20

Believers

Those who spend the night in devotion, bowing and standing before their Lord. 25:64

You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking grace from Allah and His pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their likeness in the Torah. 48:29, 59:8

Is one who worships devoutly in the night, prostrating and standing, mindful of the Hereafter, and placing his hope in his Lord’s mercy, equal to one who does not? Say, "Are those who know and those who do not know alike?" Only those with understanding will take heed. 39:9

So that Allah may reward them for the best of what they did and increase them from His bounty. 24:38, 42:26

And when the prayer is finished, disperse through the land and seek Allah’s bounty 62:10

Those who are humble in their prayers, 23:2

And who are diligent in their prayers. 23:9, 70:34

These are the true believers 8:4, 9:112, 23:1

These are the ones truly guided by their Lord, and they will be successful." 2:5

Those who believe in the Hereafter will believe in it, and they will guard their prayers. 6:92

Say, “My Lord commands justice. Set your faces toward Him in every place of worship and call upon Him sincerely in faith. Just as He created you, so shall you return.” 7:29

Are people who are not distracted by trade or commerce from remembering Allah, establishing prayer, and giving charity. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will tremble, 24:37

Bow with those who bow. 2:43

Say, “My prayers are for Allah.” 6:162

Seek help through prayer 2:45, 2:153

Indeed, the human being was created anxious, 70:19

Except those who pray, 70:22

Those who are constant in their prayers, 70:23

Jews and Christians

Yet they are not all alike, among the People of the Book are those who stand in devotion, reciting Allah’s verses at night and bowing in prayer. 3:113

Allah took a covenant from the Children of Israel, appointing twelve leaders among them. He said, “I am with you, if you establish prayer, give charity, believe in My messengers, support them, and lend to Allah a good loan, I will erase your sins and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow. 5:12

They were commanded only to worship Allah, devoting their faith to Him alone, to establish prayer and give charity. That is the true religion. 98:5

Disbelievers

Their prayer at the Sacred House is nothing but whistling and clapping. 8:35

And when it is said to them, “Bow down,” they do not bow. 77:48

They will say, “We were not among those who prayed, 74:43

Hypocrites

The hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He turns their deception against them. When they stand for prayer, they do so lazily, only to be seen by others, remembering Allah but little. 4:142

So, woe to those who pray, 107:4

Yet are heedless of their prayers, 107:5

When you call to prayer, they ridicule it as mere amusement. This is because they lack understanding. 5:58

Their donations are only rejected because they disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger, come to prayer lazily, and give reluctantly. 9:54

Abraham

And remember when We made the Sacred House a place of gathering and security for people, saying, 'Take the standing place of Abraham as a site of prayer.' We commanded Abraham and Ishmael, 'Purify My House for those who circle it, stand in prayer, bow, and prostrate. 2:125, 22:26

Mary

O Mary, be devout to your Lord, bow down, and prostrate with those who worship.’ 3:43

Angels

And we are the ones who line up in ranks, 37:165

And we are the ones who glorify Him.” 37:166

Family

Command your family to pray and be steadfast in it. We do not ask you for provision; We provide for you. The ultimate outcome is for the righteous. 20:132

Intoxicants

O believers, do not approach prayer while intoxicated until you understand what you say, 4:43

Neglecting

But successors came after them who neglected prayer and followed desires, so they will meet destruction. 19:59

Satan

O believers! Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous offerings, and divining arrows are vile works of Satan, so avoid them that you may succeed. 5:91

Good

O you who believe, bow, prostrate, worship your Lord, and do good, so that you may succeed. 22:77

Prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing. The remembrance of Allah is greater. 29:45

Money and Zakah

Give Zakah

Give charity 2:43, 2:110, 2:177, 2:277, 4:77, 4:162, 5:55, 9:5, 9:11, 9:18, 9:71, 22:41, 22:78, 24:37, 24:56, 27:3, 31:4, 33:33, 58:13, 73:20, 98:5

He knows what you conceal and what you reveal, and He is fully aware of all that you earn. 2:270, 6:3

Establish prayer and give charity. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will find its reward with Allah. 2:110

Those will have their reward with their Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve. 2:277, 4:162, 23:4, 27:3, 31:4

The Righteous and Money

Righteous

Alms are meant for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need reassurance, freeing captives, aiding the indebted, supporting Allah’s cause, and assisting stranded travellers. This is a duty ordained by Allah. 9:60

True righteousness is in one who gives wealth, despite loving it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, travellers, and those who ask for help, and for freeing slaves. 2:177

The one who gives his wealth to purify himself, 92:18

Seeking nothing in return, 92:19

Sincerity

O believers, do not ruin your charity with reminders or hurtful words, like one who spends only to be seen by people and does not truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. His example is like a rock covered with dust; when rain falls, it washes it away, leaving nothing behind. 2:264

But those who give seeking Allah’s pleasure and with firm faith, their example is like a garden on a fertile hill. When rain falls, it yields double, and even if no rain falls, it still produces. 2:265

Would any of you wish to have a lush garden of palm trees and vines, with rivers flowing beneath, only to be struck by old age and weakness, and then a fiery wind destroys it? 2:266

Whatever you spend or vow, Allah knows it well. But the wrongdoers will have no helpers. 2:270

Giving charity openly is good, but giving to the needy in private is even better; it absolves you of your sins. 2:271

Whatever you give in charity benefits your own soul, as long as you do so seeking Allah’s pleasure. Whatever you donate will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged. 2:272

Acknowledged

Nor do they spend anything, small or great, or cross any valley, without it being recorded for them, so that Allah may reward them for their best deeds. 9:121

Spending

Those who give in charity and do not follow it with reminders or harm will have their reward with their Lord, no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve. 2:262, 2:274, 13:22, 14:31, 35:29

Those who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, and conduct their affairs through mutual consultation, spending from what We have provided them. 42:38

Give from what We have provided them. 2:3, 32:16

Those who give in both ease and hardship, who restrain their anger, and who forgive others. 3:134

They ask you what they should spend. Say, ‘Whatever you give should be for parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, and travellers. 2:215

Give orphans their wealth and do not substitute the good with the bad. Do not consume their property by mixing it with your own; this is a grave sin. 4:2

Do not entrust the immature with your wealth, which Allah has made a means of sustenance. Provide for them, clothe them, and speak to them with kindness. 4:5

Those who, when they spend, are neither wasteful nor stingy, but take a balanced approach. 25:67

Listen, obey, and give for your own good. Whoever is protected from the stinginess of their soul, it is they who will succeed. 64:16

Spend in the cause of Allah, but do not let your own hands lead to destruction. Do good. 2:195

Spend from what He has entrusted to you. Those who believe and give will have a great reward. 57:7

Give from what We have provided them. 2:3, 32:16

O believers, give from the good things you have earned and from what We have produced for you from the earth. Do not choose the inferior portions for charity, things you would not accept yourselves except with reluctance. 2:267

But among the desert Arabs are those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and consider what they spend as a means of nearness to Allah and the Messenger’s prayers. Indeed, it brings them closer, Allah will admit them into His mercy. 9:99

The desert Arabs who stayed behind will say, “Our wealth and families kept us busy, so ask forgiveness for us.” They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts. Say: Who can protect you from Allah if He intends harm or benefit for you? 48:11

No, you thought the Messenger and the believers would never return to their families, and that thought pleased your hearts. You harboured evil assumptions, and you were a ruined people. 48:12

And when they’re told, “Give from what Allah has provided you,” the disbelievers say to the believers, “Should we feed those whom Allah could have fed if He wanted? You’re clearly misguided.” 36:47

You will never attain righteousness until you give freely from what you love. Whatever you give, Allah knows it well. 3:92

Multiplied

Who will offer Allah a good loan, that He may multiply it for them, and grant them a generous reward? 57:11

Those who give in charity, whether openly or in secret, will receive a multiplied reward. 57:18

The example of those who spend their wealth in Allah’s cause is like a seed that sprouts seven ears, each bearing a hundred grains. Allah multiplies for whomever He wills. 2:261

What you give in interest to increase your wealth does not increase with Allah. But what you give in charity, seeking His pleasure, that will multiply. 30:39

Who will lend to Allah a good loan, which He will multiply many times over? Allah withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will return. 2:245, 64,17, 73:20

Charity

Charity is for those who are devoted to Allah’s cause and unable to earn a living. The unaware may think they are self-sufficient because they do not beg, but you can recognize them by their humility. They do not persistently ask people for help. 2:273

Allah blesses charity. 2:276

Let not those of wealth and means among you swear never to help their relatives, the needy, and those who migrated for Allah’s sake. Let them forgive and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? 24:22

If a debtor is in hardship, grant them time until they can repay with ease. But if you forgive the debt as charity, it is better for you, if only you knew. 2:280

Some criticize you regarding charity. If they receive a share, they are pleased, but if they do not, they become resentful. 9:58

Those who mock the believers who give charity, whether little or much, Allah will mock them in return. 9:79

Others have confessed their sins; they mixed righteous deeds with wrongdoing. Perhaps Allah will turn to them in mercy. 9:102

Take charity from their wealth to purify and uplift them, and pray for them; your prayer is a source of peace for them. 9:103

Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts repentance from His servants and receives their charity? 9:104

Mujahideen

Those who remain seated while others strive in Allah’s cause are not equal, except those with valid excuses. Allah has elevated those who struggle with their wealth and lives above those who stay behind. He has promised all believers a great reward, but He has granted a higher rank and special forgiveness to those who strive. 4:95

True believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, then never doubt, and strive with their wealth and lives in Allah’s cause. They are sincere. 49:15

Compensation

A believer should never kill another believer, except by mistake. Whoever does so must free a believing slave and pay compensation to the victim’s family, unless they choose to forgo it. If the victim belonged to a hostile people but was a believer, then the atonement is freeing a believing slave. If the victim was from a people bound to you by a treaty, then compensation must be paid along with freeing a believing slave. Those unable to do so must fast for two consecutive months. 4:92

Inheritance

You receive half of what your wives leave if they have no children. If they do, you receive a quarter after fulfilling any bequests and debts. Wives receive a quarter of what you leave if you have no children, but if you do, they receive an eighth, after fulfilling any bequests and debts. If a man or woman leaves neither parents nor children but has a brother or sister, each receives a sixth. If there are more siblings, they share a third, after fulfilling any bequests and debts, without causing harm. 4:12

These are Allah’s limits. Whoever obeys Him and His Messenger will be admitted into gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will remain forever. That is the ultimate success. 4:13

For everyone, We have appointed heirs to inherit what parents and relatives leave behind. But if you have made a pledge, fulfil it. 4:33

You greedily consume inheritance, 89:19

Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, nor use it to bribe authorities to wrongfully consume a portion of others’ wealth knowingly. 2:188

Giving Orphans their Property

Test the orphans until they reach maturity. If they prove responsible, hand over their wealth. Do not consume it wastefully or hastily before they grow up. The wealthy should not take compensation, but the needy may take fairly. When transferring their wealth, ensure witnesses are present. 4:6

If relatives, orphans, and the needy are present at the time of inheritance, grant them something and speak to them kindly. 4:8

Let those who fear for their own vulnerable children be mindful of Allah and speak justly. 4:9

“Do not approach the orphan’s property except to improve it, until they reach maturity. Give full measure and weight in fairness 6:152

Contracted Debt

O believers, when you contract a debt for a fixed term, record it in writing. Let a scribe write it fairly between you. No scribe should refuse to write as Allah has taught them. Let the debtor dictate, fearing Allah, and not omit anything. But if the debtor is weak, unable, or lacks understanding, let their guardian dictate with fairness. Bring two witnesses from among your men. If two men are not available, then one man and two women, so that if one forgets, the other may remind her. Witnesses must not refuse when called upon. Do not neglect to document transactions, whether small or large, until their due date. This is more just before Allah, stronger for testimony, and less likely to cause doubt, unless it is an immediate exchange. In that case, there is no blame if you do not record it. But take witnesses when making a deal. Let no harm come to the scribe or the witness, for if you do, it is sinful. Be mindful of Allah, for He teaches you, and He knows all things. 2:282

If you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit should be taken. If one entrusts another, let the trustee fulfil their trust and fear Allah, their Lord. Do not conceal testimony, for whoever does so has a sinful heart. 2:283

War Booty

And know that whatever spoils you gain, a fifth belongs to Allah, His Messenger, the needy, the orphans, the poor, and the traveller, if you truly believe in Allah and what We sent down to Our servant on the Day of Distinction, the day the two armies met. 8:41

So, consume what you have gained, lawful and good 8:69

Interest

O believers, do not consume interest, multiplying it many times over. 3:130

But those who consume interest will rise on Judgment Day like one possessed by Satan. That is because they claim, ‘Trade is just like interest,’ but Allah has forbidden interest and permitted trade. Whoever receives this warning and stops may keep what was earned in the past; Allah will judge them. But those who persist will be companions of the Fire, where they will remain forever. 2:275

Allah erases interest. 2:276

O believers, be mindful of Allah and give up any remaining interest, if you are truly faithful. 2:278

Say: “Whatever reward I might ask of you, it is yours. My reward is only with Allah.” 34:47

If you do not, then be warned of war from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may keep your principal, do not wrong others, and you will not be wronged. 2:279

Nearing Death

It is prescribed that when death approaches any of you, if they leave behind wealth, they should make a fair will for parents and close relatives. This is a duty upon the righteous. 2:180

Spend from what We have provided you before death comes to one of you, and he says, “My Lord, if only You would delay me for a little while, I would give in charity and be among the righteous.” 63:10

But Allah will never delay a soul when its time has come. 63:11

O believers, spend from what We have provided for you before the Day comes when there will be no bargaining, no friendship, and no intercession. The disbelievers are the true wrongdoers. 2:254, 14:31, 69:35

The Unrighteous and Money

Love of Wealth

O believers! Many rabbis and monks consume people’s wealth unjustly and turn others away from Allah’s path. Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in Allah’s cause, give them news of a painful punishment. 9:34

Woe to every slanderer and mocker, 104:2

Who hoards wealth and counts it, 104:3

And love wealth with an obsessive love. 89:20

Stingy

Those who hoard wealth and withhold it from others should know that Allah does not love arrogance. 57:24

Some among them pledged to Allah, saying, “If He grants us wealth, we will surely give charity and be righteous.” 9:75

But when He gave them wealth, they became stingy and turned away in defiance. 9:76

So, He placed hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they meet Him, because they broke their promise and lied. 9:77

Not Spending

And those who spend their wealth to be seen by people, without believing in Allah or the Last Day 4:38

Those who hoard wealth and refuse to spend in Allah’s cause should not think it is good for them. Rather, it will be a burden around their necks on the Day of Judgment. 3:180

Their donations are only rejected because they disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger, come to prayer lazily, and give reluctantly. 9:54

Do not let their wealth or children impress you. Allah only intends to punish them through these in this life, and their souls will depart while they are disbelievers. 9:55

The life of this world is but play and distraction. But if you believe and are mindful, He will give you your rewards and not ask for all your wealth. 47:36

If He were to ask you for it and press you, you would withhold, and He would expose your greed. 47:37

Here you are, invited to spend in Allah’s cause, but some of you withhold. And whoever withholds does so only against himself. Allah is free of need, while you are the needy. 47:38

Exchanging Covenant for Money

Do not trade Allah’s covenant for a fleeting gain. 16:95

Those who trade Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a fleeting gain will have no share in the Hereafter. Allah will neither speak to them nor look at them on the Day of Judgment, nor will He purify them. 3:77

Do not trade My revelations for a small price. 5:44

Do not trade My revelations for a fleeting gain. 2:41

They traded away Allah’s revelations for a cheap price, turning others away from His path. How evil is what they did! 9:9

Children

O you who believe, let neither your wealth nor your children distract you from the remembrance of Allah. Whoever does so, it is they who are the losers. 63:9

Your wealth and your children are only a test. 64:15

Wealth and children are adornments of this life, but lasting good deeds are better in reward and hope. 18:46

Do not entrust the immature with your wealth, which Allah has made a means of sustenance. Provide for them, clothe them, and speak to them with kindness. 4:5

Not Saving

As for those who disbelieve, their wealth and children will not avail them against Allah. 3:116, 92:11

The example of what they spend in this life is like a freezing wind that strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves; it destroys everything. Allah does not wrong them, but they wrong themselves. 3:117

Stealing

As for thieves, male or female, cut off their hands as a deterrent from Allah. 5:38

But whoever repents after wrongdoing and mends their ways, Allah will turn to them in forgiveness. 5:39

Jews

Allah has heard the words of those who said, ‘Allah is poor while we are rich.’ We will record their words and their unjust killing of the prophets. 3:181

Gambling

They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, 'There is great sin in both, though they have some benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.' They also ask what they should spend. Say, 'Give what is beyond your needs.' 2:219

Food and Eating

Eat

O humanity, worship your Lord, the One who created you and those before you, so that you may attain righteousness. 2:21

He made the earth a resting place for you and the sky a canopy, sending down rain to bring forth fruits as sustenance. 2:22

O believers, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah. 2:172

O humanity, eat from what is lawful and good on the earth 2:168

O children of Adam! Dress well at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but do not be excessive. 7:31

Lawful

All food was lawful for the Children of Israel except what they forbade themselves before the Torah was revealed. 3:93

Among livestock are those that carry burdens and those that do not. Eat of what Allah has provided 6:142

O believers! Honour your commitments. Livestock is made lawful for you, except what is explicitly forbidden. Do not hunt while in a state of pilgrimage. 5:1

O believers! Do not violate sacred rites, the sacred months, the offerings, or those journeying to the Sacred House seeking their Lord’s favour. Once you leave the pilgrimage state, you may hunt. But do not let hatred toward those who barred you from the Sacred Mosque lead you to injustice. Cooperate in righteousness, not in sin and hostility. 5:2

Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, pork, and animals sacrificed to other than Allah. Also forbidden are animals killed by strangling, impact, falling, goring, or partially eaten by predators, unless you slaughter them properly. Sacrifices made on stone altars and divination by arrows are sinful. Today, disbelievers have lost hope in your faith; fear only Me. Today, I have perfected your religion, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam for you. But if one is compelled by hunger without intent to sin. 5:3

They ask what is lawful, say: All good things are permitted, including what trained hunting animals catch for you. Eat what they retrieve, mentioning Allah’s name over it. 5:4

Today, all good things are lawful, including the food of the People of the Book, and your food is lawful for them. 5:5

Not Forbidden

They say, “These livestock and crops are forbidden, none may eat them except whom we will.” And some livestock they forbid from carrying loads, and others they do not mention Allah’s name over, fabricating lies against Him. 6:138

They say, “What is in the wombs of these animals is reserved for our men, but forbidden to our women.” But if it is stillborn, they all share in it. He will repay them for their claims. 6:139

He created eight pairs: two of sheep, two of goats. Say, “Has He forbidden the males or the females, or what their wombs contain? Tell me with knowledge, if you are truthful.” 6:143

And of camels, two; and of cattle, two. Say, “Has He forbidden the males or the females, or what their wombs contain? Or were you present when Allah commanded this?” Who is more unjust than one who fabricates lies against Allah to mislead others without knowledge? 6:144

Say, “I find nothing forbidden in what has been revealed to me except carrion, spilled blood, pork, for it is impure, or that slaughtered in defiance, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is compelled, without desire or excess. 6:145

Forbidden

He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is compelled by necessity, without desire or transgression, there is no sin upon him. 2:173, 16:115

To the Jews, We forbade every animal with an uncloven hoof, and of cattle and sheep, We forbade their fat, except what adheres to their backs, entrails, or bones. This was their recompense for their wrongdoing. 6:146

We forbade certain things to the Jews, and We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. 6:118

He was grateful for Allah’s blessings, and Allah chose him and guided him to a straight path. 6:121

Intoxicants

And from the fruits of date palms and grapes, you extract intoxicants and wholesome sustenance. Surely, in this is a sign for those who understand. 16:67

O believers, do not approach prayer while intoxicated until you understand what you say. 4:43

They ask you about intoxicants and gambling. Say, 'There is great sin in both, though they have some benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.' 2:219

O believers! Intoxicants, gambling, idolatrous offerings, and divining arrows are vile works of Satan, so avoid them that you may succeed. 5:91

Satan seeks to sow enmity and hatred among you through wine and gambling, and to turn you away from remembrance of Allah and prayer. Will you not then refrain? 5:91

Various

Those who believe and do good are not blamed for what they consumed before, so long as they remain mindful, believe, and act righteously. 5:93

O believers! Allah will test you with game within reach of your hands and spears, so He may distinguish those who fear Him unseen. 5:94

O you who have committed yourselves to faith: do not hunt while in the sacred state of pilgrimage. If any of you deliberately kills game, then a just recompense must be made, an offering of equivalent livestock, judged by two trustworthy among you, to be delivered to the Ka‘bah; or instead, feed the poor, or fast in proportion. 5:95

Lawful for you is the catch of the sea and its food as provision for you and travellers, but forbidden is land game while in pilgrimage. 5:96

Feeding the Poor

And they give food, despite their love for it, to the poor, the orphan, and the captive, 76:8

Saying, “We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We seek neither reward nor thanks from you. 76:9

Fasting

O believers, fasting is prescribed for you as it was for those before you, so that you may develop mindfulness. 2:183

Fast for a fixed number of days. But if any of you are ill or on a journey, then make up the days later. And for those who can only fast with hardship, they may compensate by feeding a needy person. But whoever volunteers more, it is better for them. Fasting is best for you, if only you knew. 2:184

The month of Ramadan is when the Quran was revealed, a guidance for humanity, with clear proofs of guidance and discernment. So, whoever witnesses the month should fast. But if anyone is ill or traveling, let them make up the days later. Allah desires ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and glorify Him for guiding you, and so that you may be grateful. 2:185

Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread of night. Then complete the fast until nightfall. 2:187

Sacrificed Animals

In them (the animals) are benefits for you for a time, then their place is by the Ancient House. 22:33

For every nation We appointed rites, so they may mention Allah’s name over the livestock He provided. 22:34

And the sacrificial animals, We made them among Allah’s symbols for you. In them is good. So, mention Allah’s name over them as they are lined up, then when they fall on their sides, eat from them and feed the content and the needy. Thus, We made them subject to you, so you may be grateful. 22:36

Neither their flesh nor their blood reaches Allah, but your piety does. Thus, He subjected them to you so you may glorify Allah for what He has guided you to. 22:37

Hajj

Pilgrimage

Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among Allah’s sacred symbols. Whoever performs pilgrimage or minor pilgrimage, there is no blame in walking between them. 2:158

Moons

They ask you about the new moons. Say, 'They mark time for people and for pilgrimage.' 2:189

House

Indeed, the first house of worship established for humanity was in Mecca, a blessed place and a guidance for all people. 3:96

In it are clear signs, including the station of Abraham. Whoever enters it is safe. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty upon those who can afford the journey. But whoever refuses, Allah is beyond the need of all creation.3:97

Sacrificial Animals and Fasting During Hajj

Complete the pilgrimage and minor pilgrimage for Allah. But if you are prevented, then offer a sacrifice as you can. Do not shave your heads until the sacrifice reaches its place. If you are ill or have an ailment of the scalp, then compensate with fasting, charity, or sacrifice. When you are safe, perform the pilgrimage, and if you cannot, then fast for three days during the pilgrimage and seven when you return, making ten in total. This applies to those whose families do not reside near the Sacred Mosque. 2:196

No Sex

Pilgrimage takes place in appointed months. Whoever undertakes it must avoid sexual intercourse, wrongdoing, and disputes. Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. Take provisions, but the best provision is righteousness. 2:197

Departing

There is no blame in seeking the bounty of your Lord during pilgrimage. When you leave Arafat, remember Allah near the sacred site. Remember Him as He has guided you, for before this, you were astray. 2:198

Then move on from where the people move on, and seek Allah’s forgiveness. 2:199

When you have completed your sacred rites, remember Allah as you once remembered your forefathers, rather, remember Him even more. 2:200

Tell Others

And proclaim the pilgrimage to humanity, they will come to you on foot and on every lean mount, traveling distant paths, 22:27

So, they may witness benefits for themselves and mention Allah’s name over the livestock He provided for them. So, eat from them and feed the needy and the poor. 22:28

Then let them complete their rites, fulfil their vows, and circle the Ancient House. 22:29
